DOUGLAS CORRIGAN: Wrong-Way Corrigan , American aviator of the Thirties who set out in his plane...
DOUGLAS CORRIGAN: Wrong-Way Corrigan", American aviator of the Thirties who set out in his plane promising to fly west and ended up making a trans-Atlantic crossing. His minor miscalculation brought him national fame. An historic, most important document, Corrigan's official permission from the City of New York to undertake what would become his historic flight from Floyd Bennett Field, signed by Corrigan just one day before his famous flight! The document bears the printed letterhead of the New York Department of Docks, Floyd Bennett Field, and is dated July 18, 1938. It reads in part: "...WHEREAS, the City of New York...has permitted me/us to store our Airplane, License No. NX 9243 in Hangar No. 3 at Floyd Bennett Field...and has further permitted me/us to make an aircraft flight or flights from said Floyd Bennett Field...undertaken at our/my own risk and on our/my own responsibility...I/we do hereby agree to indemnify [New York City]...for any injuries or damages that may occur...as a result of said flights or take-offs...regardless of how such injury or death may occur, whether while engaged in a flight or attempted flight or by reason of our being on said Floyd Bennett Field..." Boldly signed by Corrigan at bottom, also signed by three witnesses and a notary. Fine condition. $2,000-3,000
