The OPEN, ALERT, AWAKE series, which includes Lots 68, 230 and 231, depicts the mingling of landscape and technology, a pervasive theme in Doug Aitken's work. In these nocturnal photographs of Los Angeles, bright electric signs illuminate sections of a suburban neighborhood. Despite their warm glow, the blankness of these signs emphasizes the absence of human beings, and lends a haunting anonymity to these images. This desolate feeling is overwhelming in many of Aitken's photographs, as well as his video installations. "The self is never given in Aitken's works, rather, the subject emerges as a complex system of detours and technological mediations" (Daniel Birnbaum, dOUG AITKEN, London and New York, Phaidon, 2001, p. 97).
