DOOLITTLE, JAMES H.
(d. 1993) American aviator who gained fame both as a racing pilot and as leader of the first air raid on Tokyo during World War II. Rare war-date T.L.S. "Jim" with fully-signed transmittal envelope, 1p. 4to., "Headquarters, Northwest African Strategic Air Force", July 21, 1943 to his famous fellow aviator, Roscoe Turner. Doolittle nonchalantly describes his combat missions, in part: "…Am getting in quite a bit of interesting cross country here. Was over Rome before yesterday. Didn't land. Clare and the rest of your friends here join me in sincere wishes…". Doolittle passed on landing in Rome - it was still in Axis hands! Very good. Doolittle is rare in war-date material.
