A shape, a volume, a color, a surface is something of itself. It shouldn't be concealed as part of a fairly different whole.
Donald Judd
Considered one of the leading practitioners of Minimalist art, Donald Judd abandoned painting in the mid-1960s to create works in accordance with his theories on the clarity and strength of the singular form. His ideals are demonstrated in this work, in which the internal logic depends equally on mass and space. The solid forms protruding from the base progressively increase in width from left to right, while consequently the voids recede in the opposite direction. The result is a work in which space and void, equally present, collectively achieve totality of form. Its sense of precision is further accentuated through its medium of sleek, monochromatic aluminum.
