DIX, JOHN A.
(1798 - 1879) Union major general most remembered for his threat to shoot anyone hauling down the American flag, and his suppression of the bloody New York draft riots. War-date A.L.S. "John A. Dix" adding rank, 1p. 7 3/4" x 3 3/4", [Washington], Feb. 6, [1863], to Secretary of Navy Gideon Welles, in part: "...Major R. H. Morse had a permit from Gen'l. Viele to take goods into counties south of Norfolk...I afterwards revoked the permit. The goods were never offered for sale…He acted in good faith, and should be allowed to take the goods back to Norfolk…". Very good.
