Two ledger/accounting sheet fragments, listing goods and services, and debts settled: 1. Ledger document dated from January 4, 1775, to March 8th, 1777. There appears to be a signature at the bottom of the page, but it is illegible. There is an inscription and later date written on the reverse side (which has a survey[?] chart): "Last of most regular -- March 3d, 1820." Accounting line items include: May 10th, 1776, "Carting two very heavy loads of press'd hay to Harris's Wharf Spent of Whole Day"; Sept. 13th, 1776, "Mr. Humphrey Pratt, Junior(?) D-- To Carting a Load of Sugar from the Waterside detain'd me a Long time in the Evening"; Jan. 10th, 1777, "To one Bushel of corn by Seth Pratt";  Feb. 1777, "To two Bushels of Corn by Capt. Richard Dickinson." 6 6/16in. x 7 1/4in. Condition: Appears to be the bottom half of a full ledger page; one vertical and one horizontal fold; toning, soiling; edge tears and folds. 2. Ledger document dated from 1778 to 1786, with a survey(?) chart on the back. Line item entries include: Jan(?) 26, 1786, "This Day Settled all Accounts between me the Sub(---?) and Sam. Tully, as well on that of his Fathers Estate, as on his own Acct and Due to him to Balance four Shillings--", signed Samuel Short(?). 7in. x 7 1/4in. Condition: Appears to be the bottom half of a full ledger page; one vertical and at least three horizontal folds; toning, soiling; edge tears and folds; tonging; dark toning/dampstain on bottom margin; edge tears/folds; approx. 1 1/8in. tear at bottom where drawn line scored the paper. PLEASE NOTE: THE DOCUMENTS ARE TONED/DARKENED WITH AGE; IMAGES MAY APPEAR LIGHTER ON DIFFERENT SCREENS. This lot and the other Chapman-related items offered in this sale were part of a collection of papers and ephemera related to the family of Edward Mortimer Chapman (1862-1952), a Connecticut pastor, academic, and author, and a descendant of Robert Chapman, one of the first settlers of Saybrook, Connecticut (c. 1635).
