With each of the magazines, there was often an ongoing conceptual collaboration on story ideas between the photographer and the members of the editorial staff. "There is something to be done about singles (here) but I don't yet see how to do it...," Arbus wrote to thE SUNDAY TIMES [LONDON] editor Peter Crookston in 1969. "...In the Catskills there are entire weekends devoted to the procurement of people for people..." (DIANE ARBUS: MAGAZINE WORK, Aperture, 1984, p. 169.) "The Affluent Ghetto," which included this picture, was published on January 1, 1971 in the Sunday Times Magazine [LONDON] and profiled two "utopian" communities in the Southwestern United States, The South Bay Singles Club and Sun City, a retirement community.
