The story addressed friendships between creative partners such as the poets W.H. Auden and Marianne Moore, and the film stars Lillian and Dorothy Gish. Another couple depicted was Rudolf Nureyev and Eric Bruhn, two dancers in New York, who posed in a ballet studio during a warm-up for that evening's performance. This print was a gift from Arbus to Nureyev, who autographed it in black ink and gave it to dancer George Verdak sometime in the 1960s. It was subsequently acquired by the current owner directly from the latter's estate.
