George III fruit bowl or dessert dish, sterling silver, made London, England, 1789. Circular body with lobed sides and edges. In the center is a coat of arms (replete with soldier, plumed horse, suit of armour, lion, family motto etc) surrounded by embossed fruit and and leaves. Raised fruit is almost 3-dimentional. Outstanding workmanship. Highest quality. Weighs about 4 1/4 lbs(20oz). Diam is 10inches. Hallmarked inbetween fruit with monarch's head, leopard head, lion passant, date letter C. Excellent condition. The arms and motto are those of Baron Rossmore (family name Westenra) county Monaghan, Ireland, shown in Debrett's Illustrated Peerage. The motto translates, After battles, rewards.<BR>A learned and very kind gentleman from Ireland who knows the history of the family who owned the bowl and lived in a castle nearby send me a great deal of information, including the following:<BR>The family of Westenra is of Dutch origin and was of great antiquity there.<BR>They left Holland as a result of the persecution of the Protestants by the<BR>Duke of Alva in the reign of Charles V of Spain. Holland was a Spanish<BR>province at that time. The Westenra arms in the shield on the bowl show a<BR>sea-horse which is a reference to the valour of one of the family who,<BR>during Alva's campaign, swam an arm of the sea to bring information to his<BR>fellow countrymen engaged in the fight against Alva.
