CONVERSION BSA SHIRLEY No. 4 MKI (T) BOLT ACTION SNIPER RIFLE WITH TELESCOPE AND ACCESSORIES. Cal. 303 British. S# M36992. Numbers match on receiver, butt socket & bolt. Bbl. 25 1/4". Bbl. is marked on right side of muzzle w/ British export proofs. Adj. aperture rear sight marked on adjusting knob "N67" graduated to 1300 yards. Battle aperture has been removed which is correct for this rifle. Blade front sight w/ protective ears. Beginning in September, 1942 the renowned London gunmakers Holland & Holland undertook conversion of No. 4 rifles to Sniper rifles. The rifles were selected largely from production at the BSA SHIRLEY factory using the No. 32 telescopic sight. The H&H conversions are marked "S51" at the belly of the stock as is this rifle. Approx. 26,000 of these conversions were turned out by H&H. The receiver is marked on the left side of the but socket "M47C / 1944 / T R". Left side of receiver is also marked "T" & has very faint "No4 MKI" Right side of receiver ring has "crown proof" & "ENGLAND" which is an early import mark to indicate country of origin. Receiver rail is marked below bolt head "S". Receiver is fitted w/ correct scope bases. Safety is marked "M/47C". Bolt knob has been drilled to lighten. Trigger guard marked "M/47C" is fitted w/ swivel at forward guard screw. Mixed hardwood stock set; stock components have crisp legible markings. Buttstock is marked on top of grip w/ "28041" which is scope S#. Marked underneath "SL broad arrow & view marks". Buttstock has added raised comb attached w/ 2 steel screws. Cast metal trap buttplate. Forend is marked under front w/ vertically aligned "view mark / JO / broad arrow" plus partially lined out "34172". Scope mt. has S# on left side to match rifle. Rings are numbered on right side w/ 3 digits each to ensure against loss & for correct assembly. Telescope markings are enhanced in white & are marked on top & left of the tube, "TEL STGNo 32 MKIII / OS 2039 A / AK&S No 28041 / 1945 / broad arrow". Also marked w/ stenciled "W (red) B (blue)". Scope has pointed post w/ cross wire reticle & graduated finger adj. knobs for windage & elevation. Scope equipped w/ leather caps. Strap is marked "B.H.G. 1944". MAGS: 1 good unmarked 10 rd. mag. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: green canvas covered metal scope case w/ folding top. Case has carrying straps; original stenciled markings on case have been obscured w/ additional period paper labels & adjustment instructions which are secured by a clear cellophane tape. Labels include rifle, S# & telescope no. dated 12-61. Tan leather sling which appears to be for French MAS 36 rifle. Sling is in good serviceable condition w/ obscured ink markings. Correct wooden carrying & storage chest w/ hinged top & padlock hasps. Case has painted primarily dark green w/ swatches of brown. Chest measures approx. 46 1/2" X 10 1/2" X 6" & is marked in white stencil on both sides "CHEST. S.A. NO 15. MK. I." Additional marking is in black marker "CS #5". End of chest is fitted w/ metal holder w/ paper tag. Markings on tag include: "rifle S# & EQUIPMENTS No.4 T.W. RIFLES MKI". CONDITION: rifle has well preserved arsenal rework finish on both wood & metal leaving crisp markings & very good appearance w/ only light wear & scattered handling marks. Scope mt. has most of its arsenal rework finish w/ light high point wear. Scope finish appears original w/ light wear & handling marks. Objective end of scope has area of added gloss black extending rearward approx. 1 1/2". Scope adjustments turn freely & optics appear clear & serviceable w/ 1 tiny spot left side of cross wire. Scope case has wear plus staining, a sm. amount of loose stitching w/ legible labeling. Chest has good visual appearance commensurate w/ age & service use w/ the expected flaking paint, scratches, worn corners plus worn & scuffed leather carrying straps.
