DERBY PORCELAIN - The Tamworth Tureen - a fine Derby two-handled armorial soup tureen, of tapering oval form beneath a double domed cover with gilt leafy loop handle, enamelled and gilt with coat of arms, the cover with two crests and coat of arms, all within broad gros bleu borders gilt with six-pointed stars divided by palm fronds and sprays of oak leaves and acorns, the base and cover with bands of berried laurel, 15.25in over handles, 10.25in high, crown, crossed batons, dots and D in gold, c.1800 (see illustration) The tureen is enamelled with the arms of Robert Shirley Viscount Tamworth impaling those of his wife the Hon. Sophia Curzon. The cover (a) with coronet and monogram of Sophia Caroline Viscountess Tamworth, the Hon. Sophia Curzon was daughter of the 2nd Baron Scarsdale. She married in 1800 Robert Viscount Tamworth, only son of the 7th Earl Ferrers. He died before his father so never became Lord Ferrers. She died in 1849 without issue. (b) with crest and coronet of Robert Viscount Tamworth. (c) with arms of a member of the Penn family (second son). Sir Nathaniel Curzon, 2nd Bt, married in 1671 Sarah, daughter of William Penn, of Penn Manor, Buckinghamshire.
