DERBY PORCELAIN
DERBY PORCELAIN - A Derby porter mug, painted by Moses Webster with three colourful bouquets of summer flowers, gilt line borders, the angular loop handle with gilt leaf detail, 3.5in high, crown, crossed batons, dots and D in red, c.1815 (see illustration) Moses Webster was a native of Derby and trained as a painter at Baxter's School of Art in London between 1814-1816. On his return he worked at the old Derby factory until leaving in 1825. He was chiefly a flower painter, perhaps the best of the latter day flower painters at the factory. He was, however, equally competent as a landscape artist and executed many drawings of country houses, amongst them a fine view of Kedleston Hall, subsequently published as a lithograph.
