DER GROSSE AUFTRAG TAKEN FROM THE REICHS CHANCELLERY
"DER GROSSE AUFTRAG" TAKEN FROM THE REICHS CHANCELLERY
Book taken from the Reichs Chancellery library, "Der Grosse Auftrag: Vier Jahre Deutscher Werkarbeit 1933-1936" ("The Great Assignment: Four Years of German Factory Work"), by Freidrich Heiss (Berlin: Volk und Reich Verlag), 1937, 95pp. folio, a heavily illustrated examination of the growth of many different sectors of the German economy under the economic policies of the NSDAP. It describes increased production of coal, oil, electricity, steel, trains, ships, lumber, highways, and many others, each illustrated with a photograph, overlaid with a line chart showing overall growth. Also illustrated are declining unemployment rates and rising birth rates. Several pages also describe the Deutsche Arbeitsfront (German Labor Front), the state-sanctioned labor union, and the annual party rallies at Nuremburg. The book is bound in brown leather boards, and is enclosed in a heavy taupe paperboard presentation box. The set also includes a presentation card, 2pp. 8vo., from the NSDAP Office for Technology for the district of Silesia, printed on vellum, addressed to Hitler and dated Sep. 1936. The book shows minor warping of the front and back covers, and the binding is loose in several places, but all pages remain attached. Very good. Our consignor's father was the chief of staff, American Headquarters, Berlin Air Command from June to August, 1945. During this period, he had the opportunity to "liberate" several volumes and other items from the Reichschancellery, specifically Hitler's offices and those adjoining. This example is one of those volumes. With a copy of the consignor's notarized letter of provenance.
