TEETH, PLAINS, LATE 19TH CENTURY. 1) Choker consists of dentalium shells strung on sinew, with rawhide spacers and tanned hide tie thongs, typical of central Plains Indians tribes (Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho). Although it is widely believed that dentalia originate only along the Northwest Coast, most dentalia utilized by the Plains tribes during the 19th C. actually came from European sources and imported by traders for exchange to Indian peoples. Driebe 1997, pg 320. Size: Proper 15-1/2 long. CONDITION: Four shells missing and one shell broken. 2) String of teeth: (probably buffalo), strung with faceted Bohemian ruby glass beads.
