<b>731. DENOUCING A MINISTER WILLIAM BARBER</b>, Aide-de-camp to Brig. Gen. William Maxwell in 1777 and Lord Sterling in 1778. Curious A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Mar. 16, 1788 to Nicholas Gilman complaining about a Episcopal minister in Portsmouth, N.H. In part: <i>"...There is a man in your State that is a Preacher of the Gospel (as is said of Jesus Christ, but I fear his is of Beelzebub) who has every Day for two Years hast...been giving me such Hints that he intends to defraud me of £120 and upwards that I under the Necessity of requesting you in Friendship to help me the Means of restoring him to a Sense of his Duty - This Man's Name is John Cozins Ogden - he is of a Family who live in Eliz[abeth]town New Jersey - about two Years ago he was a petty Merchant between that Place and New Haven in Connecticut, where after he had deluded my Purses and betrayed his own Honor and Confidence, he received the Benediction of Bishop Ebring, and was sent to reform the uniformed of a Parish in Portsmouth of New Hampshire for which Service, I am told he receives £170 year Currency annually...</i>". With integral address leaf, the verso of which bears the following notice: "<i>It has become so much the Fashion of late to open letters which pass the Post Offices in Search of Politics - that the Writer finds occasion to make this note and to present his Compliments to the Curious if this should fall into the Hands of such, and to request that after their curiosity is gratified they will be pleased to inclose, direct and forward it, as herewith intended</i>".
