A great war-date A.L.S. "Charles W. Sanford", on Head-Quarters First Division, N. Y. S. M. letterhead, 1p. 4to., New York, Aug. 31, 1861, to Gov. Buckingham detailing the transportation of Lyon's body from New York City to Hartford. In full: "Previous to receiving your telegram, I had in pursuance of telegraphic communications with Major Conant, issued orders for funeral honors to the remains of General Lyons, for Monday afternoon of which orders I have enclosed a copy. The funeral procession will therefore take place here on Monday-but the remains will be forwarded to Hartford by the 12 o'clock train on Tuesday. The procession terminating on Monday at the railroad depot, where a guard of honor will remain until Tuesday noon". Along with a printed copy of Special Orders No. 52, on Head-Quarters First Division letterhead, 1p. 4to., New York, Aug. 30, 1861, in part: "…The remains of the gallant and lamented Brigadier General Lyon…will arrive in this city tomorrow afternoon. They will be received by a company of the Seventh Regiment…The funeral escort will consist of the Seventh Regiment, a section of artillery from the Fourth Regiment, and a troop of cavalry from the Third Regiment…The escort will assemble in Lafayette place, on Monday next…and commanded by Colonel Lefferts…The officers of the division…are invited to assemble in full uniform, and with the usual badge of mourning…". Both documents were issued by Major General Charles W. Sanford of the New York state militia. Included in the lot is a A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Phoenixville, Ct., June 23, 1863, by Lyon's brother, Lorenzo concerning a request for the general's signature and probate claims, in part: "…In reply would say that not having any letters of my brother in my possession that I desire to part with…I would like to inquire whether he deposited any money in your institution…[?]". Overall near fine.
