DE VERE ( Sir Stephen E. ). Grave and Gay ; verses of many years. ( London : Charles Skipper & East, printers ). (For Private Circulation Only). 1883FIRST EDITION, pp (4), 70 and leaf of imprint, 8vo, full dark green morocco, gilt bordered sides, gilt ruled and lettered spine ("Poems / Sir Stephen De Vere / 1826 / to / 1893"), inside gilt borders, edges gilt, by Birdsall & Son, Northampton : light pale ink stain on the extreme upper edge and upper portion of the fore-edge on the first ten leaves, otherwise a very good to nice copy, with 30-pages of "Miscellaneous verses / unpublished" in the author's hand, lettered so on the recto of the imprint leaf, with some corrections, and, tipped in, an ALS, one page, with conjugate blank leaf, on printed letter-heading "Barneen / Foynes / Limerick", dated 20 Sept 1893, addressed to Robin, sending him the volume and remarking on some of the verse it includes, with the bookplate of Robert and Florence Vere O'Brien.The brief introduction, dated from Curragh Chase, December 1883, disclaims the verse as of litterary or artistic merit, but "a few old friends may be glad to have them as a memorial". Certainly, few can have been printed as COPAC has BL and Bodleian only, and OCLC has NNU and MH. It is not on-line in either D or Dt. De Vere (1812-1904), native of Limerick, remembered for his kindness to his tenants and for securing amendments to the Passengers Act providing proper accomodation for emigrants.IRISH LITERATURE; VERSE; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ;
