DC. Washington. National Currency. $5. July 4, 1838. Eagle and shield flanked by 5s in oval frames; plow, spinning wheel and ship above. American flag with 26 stars, left. ``IN UNION THERE IS STRENGTH'' in the left end panel. Signed ``B. Franklin'' and G. Washington''. (HT-N20). Similar to Lot 4206 in Stack's May 2005 Ford sale (HT-20A), but the right end panel on this note features the statement ``To Counterfeit is DEATH,'' and drives that point home with an illustration of a man being hung! According to Newman, this note was a prototype pasted into a pamphlet that advocated the use of National Currency. F-VF, with several repaired splits. Still a very rare, and impressive satirical note from the Hard Times period.
