DC-12 $1 1897
This one year issue was the first printed by the American Bank Note Company, which established an Ottawa branch plant after it received the government contract. The green face tint used here was also employed on the $2 1897 issue, causing some public confusion, and it was decided to change the face tint on the $1 to light brown to better distinguish it from the $2. This was done within a year, creating a new $1 Series of 1898. The green tinted $ 1897 notes are scarce in high grade, and prohibitively rare in EF or better. This bright and very attractive piece has been graded Very Fine 25 by PMG, a high grade indeed for this issue.
From The Thomas M.
