<B>DAWSON DAWSON-WATSON (1864-1939)</B></I><BR>Untitled Landscape<I>, </B></I>1938<BR>Oil on canvas<BR>25 x 30 inches (63.5 x 76.2 cm)<BR>Signed and dated lower right<BR><BR> Dawson-Watson was born in London, England, in 1864. Before coming to this country in 1893, he had exhibited at the Royal Academy, London, England, 1886; Paris Salon, 1888; Exposition Universelle, Paris, France, 1889; Royal Cambrian Academy, 1890; and the Royal Canadian Academy, 1902. Once in the United States he exhibited widely. He is represented in the City Art Museum, St. Louis, Missouri; Springfield Art Association, Springfield, Illinois; Chicago Art Institute; New Haven Clay and Palette Club, New Haven, Connecticut; Lotus Club, New York; Vanderpool Memorial Gallery, Chicago; and in many libraries and private collections both here and abroad<I>.</B></I> He has achieved distinction as a mezzotint engraver, textile designer, portraitist, and as an executant of every form of stage detail. His awards include: Silver Medal, Portland, Oregon; three Gold and one Silver Medals, Sedalia, Missouri; Honorable Mention, Austin, Texas; Landscape Prize, Nashville, Tennessee; Popular Vote Prize, Southern States Art League, 1930; Landscape Prize, Mississippi Art Association, 1930; Alice Huger Smith Watercolor Prize, Southern States Art League, 1931; and many others.<BR><BR>The San Antonio Art League Competitions include: $5,000 prize for his painting entitled <I>The Glory of the Morning,</B></I> 1927; Hors de Concours for a painting entitled <I>Flowers of Silk,</B></I> 1928; $1,000 prize for painting <I>The Cotton Pickers,</B></I> 1929; $1,000 prize for painting <I>The Bouquet,</B></I> 1929.<BR><BR>This large-scale canvas by Dawson-Watson is his characteristic impressionist treatment of the Texas Hill Country landscape with blooming prickly pear cactus keyed to pastel-like colors.<B>Condition Report:</B> Excellent condition with minor scratch to the sky.
