DAVIS, JEFFERSON
(1808 - 1889) President of the Confederacy who led his armies beyond the surrender at Appomattox. A very important war-date A.L.S. ""J. D."" as President of the Confederacy, 1p. 8vo., [Richmond], Apr. 18, 1863, to his private secretary Burton Harrison. In full: ""Please find a bill and a letter sent with this. I do not know where Col. Fitzhugh is. Do me the favor to ask Mr. [Secretary of State] Benjamin and Mr. [Secretary of Navy] Mallory to let me see them this morning"". Davis is most likely referring to the approval of a bill proposed by the Confederate Congress to authorize the establishment of a volunteer navy in which citizens who fitted out vessels and used those vessels to capture Union ships would be entitled to prize money. The plan never took effect. Very good.
