DAVIS, JEFFERSON
(1808 - 1889) President of the Confederacy who led his armies beyond the surrender at Appomattox. Fine content A.L.S. ""Jefferson Davis"", 2pp.4to., Mississippi City, Sep.29, 1877 in which Davis lambastes his former general,Joe Johnston. Davis opens his letter inviting his correspondent to a long-term visit, then sets about attacking Johnston. In part:""àI suppose it will be necessary to notice Johnston's narration as I know he is malignant and skillful in the supporesis viri et suggestio falsi: I have not however read his book. If his misrepresentation of me were alone to be noticed, it is probable that I never should. He was indebted to mefor his advancement in the U.S. Army, and for great forebearance, if not kindness, susequently; there is no mode so easy of discharging such obligations as abuse and a pretense of having been unjustly treatedà"" Light toning, overall very good. Johnston detested Davis, especially in view of the fact that Davis had summarily dismissed the overcautious general, and Johnston made sure to crucify Davis in his memoirs.
