(DAVIS JEFFERSON) VARINA H. DAVIS: (1826 - 1906) Wife of Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States of America. Mrs. Davis remained a staunch supporter of "the lost cause" until her death. Good content A.L.S. "Jefferson Davis" 4pp. large 8vo., Beauvoir, Miss., May 17, 1882 to Col. John Wood who accompanied Davis during his flight from Richmond in April 1865. Upon the publication of his book, The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government, a Capt. Davidson wrote to Jefferson Davis accusing him of misrepresenting his contribution to the development of a torpedo. Varina responds in part: "...I received a letter from Capt. Davidson of Dec. 6, 1881...It is never pleasant to be accused of injustice nor to have any demand presented through a third person. In my reply however I endeavored without any exhibition of feeling to show Capt. Davidson that he had no ground of complaint & that his remedy was in the preparation of a paper to be published by the Hist. Soc. giving a full account of his service as others had done & were doing & as I had requested all to do. The pp. 208 & 9 to which he refers are not as clear & definite as with more time I would have made them, but I think they convey no denial of other kinds of torpedoes than those described in connection with the name of Rains & that under other circumstances other torpedoes other means of exploding them might be better than such as in our embarrassed condition we had to employ...I should no doubt have mentioned Capt. Davidson by name in connection with his application of electricity to the explosion of torpedoes as I regard his services very favorable...If...he had called my attention to the omission instead of arraigning me for what is criminal in an Executive unjustly depriving him of the credit which was due, I should have been more disposed to make any possible reparation...Though little disposed to controversy, when I see how Davidson executes his threat I shall better know how to open a battery of ridicule upon his pretensions to abort the whole torpedo service...". Usual folds, otherwise very good. $500-700
