(DAVIS JEFFERSON) VARINA H. DAVIS: (1826 - 1906) Wife of Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States of America. Mrs. Davis remained a staunch supporter of "the lost cause" until her death. Good content A.L.S. "Jefferson Davis" 4pp. large 8vo., Beauvoir, Miss., Dec. 7, 1880 to Colonel John Wood, a Confederate naval and cavalry officer who had accompanied Davis during, his flight south from Virginia after Apamattox, concerning an image for publication in Jefferson Davis' forthcoming book: The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government. She writes in part: "...I have been hoping to receive from you, an answer to my request for a sketch of your operations on the water and your photograph forth plate to be engraved of licknesses of my staff. I deeply regret that they should have miscarried, and have no idea how I can recover them. I am not satisfied with the tintype because it does not look like the dashing young officer who captured gunboats from launches, and I want you as you were. I hope Lola in her collection can find such an one, if she has got one, it will be better preserved for your children and your countrymen in a book than in a private collection....We are living in a very retired place on the Gulf Coast about midway between N. Orleans & Mobile time has not been very kind to either of us, and on myself especially the infirmities of age press heavily. Our two surviving children Maggie & Minne are both away from us. The first is married, and living in Memphis, the other at school in Germany. The past to us is filled with sad memories, the present with the casking cases of poverty. I have gain got possession of my old home, and this year, recommenced planting cotton. The season has been very unfavorable & the results consequently disappointing..." begin at 1:00 PM Eastern Time on Saturday, March 29, 2003. Part II (Lots 600-1550) will begin at Noon Eastern Time on Wednesday, April 2, 2003. However, you may bid at any time prior to the sale dates.

each lot. Lots purchased through our website (alexautographs.com) or by any other means other than the icollector.com or ebayliveauctions.com bidding service are not subject to this additional fee.

significantly from the item¹s actual condition; such returns must be made within three (3) days of purchaser¹s receipt of the lot(s). All returned lots must be in the same condition as shipped. All items are in very good condition unless stated otherwise. Items housed in frames have not been examined outside of the frame. Lots which bear defects or damage not visible because of framing will not be subject to return.
