He did so by collaging together numerous photographs he took of every detail of a given subject. As do the Cubist paintings of Picasso and Braque, Hockney's photocollages alert the viewer to the inherent limitations of human sight. Hockney was a pioneer in exploring this methodology within the medium of photography. The telephone pole is the central axis of this image, and although Hockey places the viewer quite close to the pole, we are able to see its entirety receding into the sky. This would be impossible to see if not for Hockney's ability to flatten space through this special method. The distortion of the telephone pole's surroundings bend into the manipulated framing of the image and the multiple angles heighten our awareness of the peripheral environment that the human eye does not have the ability to absorb.
