Louver Gallery, VENICE, CALIFORNIA Private Collection, GERMANY LITERATURE HOCKNEY'S PHOTOGRAPHS, London, 1983, p. 25 (illustrated) Lawrence Weschler, CAMERAWORKS: DAVID HOCKNEY: TRUE TO LIFE, New York, 1984, pl. 75 (illustrated) The painter David Hockney has often made use of photography in his work. In the early 1980s he began to collage small prints into expansive, kaleidoscopic images. Much as he would put together preparatory sketches to form a composition, Hockney has applied the painter's method of building up details with multiple small prints and composing them into a single large tableau. Dissatisfied with the limited vantage point of a single photograph, he constructed this picture from slightly varying angles, which introduce changes in light, atmosphere and mood.
