This is an original 3.25” x 2” Card Boldly Signed, “David Porter / Admiral”, no date or place, Choice Extremely Fine. Porter served in the Mexican War and with distinction during the Civil War. Minor soiling. The vivid deep brown signature “David Porter” measures fully across the card.
DAVID DIXON PORTER (1813-1891) was a career United States Navy officer, with extensive service in the years before the Civil War, including the Mexican War. His ships served at New Orleans, Vicksburg, the Red River and Fort Fisher, as well as the Atlantic Blockading Squadron. He attained the rank of Admiral, and with his adopted brother DAVID FARRAGUT was influential in winning the Civil War for the Union at sea.
