David Davidovick Burliuk (American-Ukrainian, 1881-1967) on the lower left corner. 20 x 28 cm (7.9 x 11.0 inches). Renowned as the "father of Futurism," David Davidovich Burliuk (American/Ukrainian, 1882–1967) was a painter and major contributor to Modern Art in the early part of the 20th century. Born in 1882 near the city of Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine, Burliuk studied in Odessa and Kazan, at the Munich Royal Academy of Arts, and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. During the early part of his career, Burliuk’s art was a mix of Fauvist, Cubist, and Futurist styles, which he combined with his interest in nature, a fascination for the forms and designs of Scythian culture, and a love of Ukrainian folklore.
