DATED 1776 BEDFORD CARVER POWDER HORN--EX. DRESSLAR. A finely carved priming horn, circa 9.5" in length, engraved with three lines of text: "Gabril BrunD18* Horn"; " Made* in*BedFord" and "Jenunery*ye 22 1776." Two fish grace the horn, a swordfish and what appears to be a whale, along with several geometric engravings. This horn is attributed to the so-called "Bedford Carver" (see Guthman 1993:209-210) of New York. While we have not checked the NY state rosters, there is a distinct possibility that this horn was carried in the Revolutionary War. Ex: Jim Dresslar Collection. Fine patina and polish, usual checking where wood plug attached; missing nail or hook for carrying strap in plug.
