DANIEL WEBSTER: (1782 - 1852) American lawyer and statesman who verbally jousted with Calhoun in the Senate and later supported Clay's compromise measures on slavery. Nice content T.L.S. signed at conclusion and in the text, 4pp. 4to., Washington, May 7 [n.y.]. Apparently in a very poor financial state, Webster describes lands in the West and Northeast which he hopes to sell to cover his debts, writing in small part: "...Thesde secular differences - brought on by these times, perplex me so much that I feel half the time mad, & half the time sad...I had invested very literally, in the Western world, mostly in excellent Gov't lands at 1.25 per acre, before the crisis...on the Illinois River, of as fine prairie & lumber land...I would cheerfully put any portion, or all, these means into any friend's hands...". Near fine. $150-250
