DANIEL RIDGWAY KNIGHT (American, 1840-1924) “AT THE WELL”. Spectacular oil on canvas scene shows two young maidens in country dress standing near a stone well with copper pot and two clay flower pots. The tall wire work stand holding the pulley for water bucket. A large bale handle pail and earthenware jug sit on a dirt path which one of the girls stand on. A large colorful flower garden encompasses most of the bottom 1/3 of the painting. It is encased by a stone wall which separates the property. Another young lady with basket under arm walks down side hill. The scene overlooks a large river lined with houses. A popular scene of Knight’s and one of his best. Signed lower left “Ridgway Knight Paris”. Housed in a spectacular 7” wide deep gesso decorated frame with silver plated artist tag with title. Hammer Galleries, New York label on reverse. PROVENANCE: Purchased from Hammer Galleries in 1981. Included is a letter from 1981 of Hammer Galleries guaranteeing authenticity. Also a letter of provenance from same indicating that the provenance was Private Collection to a New York Private Collection to Hammer Galleries. Exhibited 19th and 20th Century European and American Paintings, Recent Acquisitions, Hammer Galleries, New York, June 16 – August 31, 1981. SIZE: 26-1/2” x 33”. CONDITION: Very good to excellent.
