(DAMNED REBEL OFFICERS WANT TO SHOW OFF)
643. DAMNED REBEL OFFICERS WANT TO SHOW OFF A good war-date letter written by Union Private Robert Brown, Co. F, 37th Mass. Vol., 2pp., 8vo., Petersburg, Va., Jan. 21, 1865, to a female friend concerning everyday trench life at Petersburg, in part: "...It is raining hard here now. It is rough for the boys on picket today. I am glad I am not on. The rebs feel rather bad about the fall of Fort Fisher. The rebs desert every day. One time when I was out there was two come in. the rebs fired at them like the devil but did not hurt either of them. The reb papers talk pretty hard now about the rebellion. They think Jeff Davis is played out...when we left the [Shenandoah] Valley to come to Petersburg...we should have to drill...but the damned officers want to show off all they can. They want to try to do some thing but they don't know enough. I have got to clean up my gun for inspection...". With original transmittal envelope. An interesting letter from a soldier who was wounded at the battle of the Wilderness and also served in the 20th Mass. Overall very good. $200-300
