DALI, SALVADOR
(d. 1992) Spanish artist whose surrealistic paintings reflected his eccentric lifestyle. His works are known for their dream-like, symbolic nature. Exceptionally rare signed record sleeve "Dali", entitled "The Spanish lady and the Roman Cavalier", an opera by Scarlatti, with, on the verso, a live recording of Dali commenting as he paints, followed by a most revealing interview with the artist. The release of this record, issued by London Records, 1962, and produced by Reik Smith, brought about a lawsuit by Dali. Smith had assured the artist that the record would not be licensed for radio airplay, yet London mailed copies to radio stations and some of the recordings were inevitably broadcast. The ruling, in Dali's favor, ordered the recall and destruction of the record, making this recording a great rarity. This particular copy was given by Dali to Erik Smith when the record was first released, and was obtained directly from his estate. Record, sleeve and signed jacket are all in very good to fine condition.
