This is an exceptionally rare museum quality original coverlet made by Daniel Stephenson of Fairfield Jefferson County Iowa. The piece is dated 1860 and shows an excellent very detailed and tightly fine knotted design in a rich dark blue and white. The piece is double sided with one having a white background with blue design and the other a blue background with white design. Marked, "Made By D. Stephenson Fairfield Jefferson, Co Iowa 1860." Daniel Stephenson was born in Yorkshire, England in 1823 and moved to America with his father when he was 17. He began weaving in 1852 and was one of the finest and most renown maker of coverlets until 1877, when demand for these weavings diminished. He died in 1852. A partial corner of one of the Stephenson coverlets is on display at the Chicago Art Institute. This is a full blanket in very well preserved condition with on little wear indicative of age.
