D. P. Slingsby, Leeds, Provincial English Bar Action Percussion Rifle, NSNV, .54'' cal, 29-1/2'' browned twist steel octagonal barrel having 12 groove rifling, with maker's name engraved on top barrel flat, accompanied by early Birmingham proofs on lower barrel flat. Lock is case colored with scroll engraved vignettes and triangular cut borders which follow to the blued breech plug and combination glove-fitting triggerguard and knurled hand stop; hammer has a half-cock notch and is similarly engraved. The windage adjustable two-leaf rear sight assembly has one standing and one folding sight, with a small blade front sight. Barrel pipes house a brass-tipped rosewood ramrod with a copper handle. The figured walnut halfstock has a gloss varnish and is cut with coarse diamond checkering, bordered by three lines on the wrist, with a heavy steel buttplate, silver nosecap and ramrod guide, and a small vacant silver shield on top of wrist. Rifle is housed in a key lock mahogany campaign-style case with brass furniture and green felt lining, along with accoutrements including an ornate DIXON & SONS hallmarked copper flask with an adjustable charger and a sealed tin of Joyce percussion caps. Overall condition is very good, having indications of occasional use and retaining a strong mainspring. Barrel brown has drifted to mottled gray-black with overall fine pitting, the hook has light corrosion. The visible bore lands have patchy copper-colored fouling; lock case colors have toned bronze with faint traces of original color. Barrel dovetails and sights have small nicks and scratches from adjustments; buttplate has been polished over old corrosion and pitting. Stock has minor shrinkage and an uneven re-varnish over old dents and scratches with scattered pry marks around the lock inletting. Case has scuffs and scratches with a few shrinkage cracks and is missing the lock escutcheon and key; case lining and partitions have been periodically redone. Est.: $1,800-$2,800. (Antique)
