<B>[D.H. Lawrence] Frieda Lawrence Archive of Letters</B></I> Seven letters by Frieda Lawrence, widow of D.H. Lawrence, written to Louis Gibbon, biographer of Lawrence. Twenty total pages, various sizes and locations, dated July 20, 1954-April 2, 1955. Most with excellent content and references to Lawrence and other literary figures. In part: "<I>20 July, 54... El Prado, New Mexico... How good that your Lawrence book is coming along... Prof Roberts from Austin hasn't turned up yet... I will let you know what they say. Yes, I think it would be good to have a shrine for Lawrence in Texas! Have you got Lawrence's poems 'Pansies', I had it reprinted would you like a copy... 5 Sept. 54... El Prado, New Mexico... thank you also for the book you so kindly sent me, I have not read it all. Sometimes I don't want to read books about L, I feel it takes my own Lawrence further away from me. Did I tell you that Austin also wants to buy the Kiowa ranch & make a place for study for students. Angelino & I are pleased, because what to do with the ranch and L's little chapel was a problem </B></I>[Frieda had moved Lawrence's body from Venice and had it re-buried near the chapel]. <I>So much is happening all the time about his work, it is growing over my head. There is trouble about the copyright of 'Sons & Lovers' in America. Curiously enough 'Sons & Lovers' was not properly copyrighted ever in America. So Jerry Wald only will pay 40 percent of the price... Pallinger is a wonderful agent... 7 Oct. 54... El Prado... Jake Zeitlin from Los Angeles will come to -morrow to appraise Lawrence's manuscripts. On the 3rd of November we start for Austin where they plan a reception for us...</B></I>" Much more good content including references to the death of Aldous Huxley's wife, Maria who had been a close friend. Of this sad event, she writes: "<I>2 April 55... Box 201, Port Isabel, Texas... My dear & loyal friend through almost a lifetime, Maria Huxley died. Aldous wrote me 'as I sat by Maria's bed I thought of 25 years ago in Venice...' Then he sent me some pages he had written, how he helped her to die... Poor Aldous!</B></I>" A wonderful grouping touching on various subjects. As Frieda relates in the correspondence, most of Lawrence's manuscripts and correspondences are housed at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, University of Texas at Austin. Frieda and Lawrence began an affair while she was married to Ernest Weekley, a professor at University College, Nottingham in March 1912. A few months later, the two left for Germany and would spend the next 16 years travelling through Europe, America, and Mexico. All the letters are accompanied by the original transmittal envelopes and are in near fine condition.
