This original cast bronze bust of an elderly gentleman was cast by Franta Anyz (1876-1934) in Czechoslovakia in the early twentieth century. The piece measures approximately 12 by 5 by 5 inches (30.5 by 13.3 by 13.3 cm). Franta Anýz was a member of S.V.U. Mánes, the Manes Association of Fine Artists (in Czech "Spolek výtvarných umělců Mánes), which was an artists' association and exhibition society founded Prague in 1886 and named after the painter Josef Mánes. As an artist he was primarily known as a master jeweller and metal engraver, but he was also a successful painter, sculptor, and entrepreneur who in 1901 opened his own factory to produce a wide range of decorative and fine art metalware. He studied with Celda Klouček, and together with Emanuel Novák, he founded the Studio of Applied Arts for Decorative and Artistic Work in Prague. After his death in 1934 his foundry was run by his sons until 1948 when it was nationalized under the name of Zukov, N.P. (Source: papilio.cz.) In late 2004 through early 2005 a retrospective exhibition of Anyz's works was held at the Municipal Hall in Praque. This item resides with our client in northern New Jersey and may be seen in person by appointment.
