American industrialist (1819–1892) who financed the first permanently operational transatlantic telegraph cable. LS, one page, 5.25 x 8, November 27, 1877. Letter to Senator John Sherman, who would later be the principal author of the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890. In part: "Allow me to introduce to you my son, Edward M. Field, who goes with his wife to spend a few days at Washington. If you can do anything to make their visit there pleasant, you will confer a great favor upon me." In fine condition, with trimmed edges and writing showing through from opposing sides.
