J.H. Cutter whiskey was unquestionably the most popular whiskey in western mining camps and towns, particularly California and Nevada. More than twenty different embossed whiskey fifths were made for distribution out of San Francisco in the 1870's through Prohibition. They are a great favorite among collectors for the fancy embossing, some of which includes "pictures" or vignettes of barrels, etc. as we see here. This group has three distinct variants and one duplicate that is a remarkable dark amber specimen. Barnett 197, "Cutter OK Whiskey" in circle on the shoulder, barrels below, C.P. Moorman SF, medium amber; Barnett 178, AP Hotaling with A. No. 1 on the back, medium amber; Barnett 179, "A No. 1" in circle on back shoulder, in medium amber and very dark amber.
