Customized Left-Handed Remington Model 700 Bolt Action Rifle, belonging to Col. Charles Askins, #6323939, .257 Wea. mag. cal., 24'' barrel, blue finish, custom laminated left-hand checkered cheekpiece stock, rosewood forend cap, with gold-colored plate affixed just forward of magazine floorplate marked ''Charles Askins''. This rifle was probably converted by his good friend Roy Weatherby. Charles Askins (1907-1999) was a famous American lawman, Army officer and writer. He was born in Nebraska and his first job was fighting forest fires in Montana. He was recruited by the U.S. Border Patrol in 1930, and in his memoirs recounted that he had been involved in at least one gunfight every week. While in the Border patrol, Askins won many pistol championships and was made the leader of the Border Patrol Handgun Skills program. During WWII he made landings in North Africa, Italy, and on D-Day. During the Vietnam War, he trained South Vietnamese soldiers in shooting and airborne operations, indulging in big game hunting at every opportunity. He held several big game hunting records, as well as two national pistol championships, American Handgunner of the Year award, and many lesser titles. Askins' career spanned over 70 years, writing books and over 1000 magazine articles on subjects related to hunting and shooting. Many rifles over Col. Askins' career were made especially for him, his own idea, or presentations from friends in the gun community. Condition is excellent, as converted to the Weatherby caliber, retaining approx. 97% blue. Rifle shows light general use with minor scuffs and dings to the stock. Finely tuned trigger, crisp action, and excellent bore, with clear scope optics. Est.: $1,800-$2,400. (C&R)
