Custom Engraved Colt Model 1878 Frontier Double Action Revolver

Manufactured in 1882, this revolver features broad floral scroll with a punch dot background covering the sides of the barrel, frame and cylinder flats. There is a simple line, and zigzag and dot design on the rear of the cylinder, decorative line, zigzag and dot designs and star burst on the ejector housing, a zigzag bordering on the frame, and a zigzag, dot and line design on the trigger guard and back strap. The top of the barrel is marked with the one-line address in a zigzag bordered panel and the upper left front of the trigger guard is marked "45 CAL". The matching serial number is marked on the butt and rear face of the cylinder. The replaced, cut down barrel is numbered :7684". Blade front and frame notch rear sights, nickel finish with fire blue finish on the hammer (with the sides polished), trigger and the cylinder release, and fitted with checkered hard rubber grips with the Rampant Colt in an oval at the top. The accompanying factory letter verifies the caliber, 7 1/2 inch barrel, nickel finish and rubber grips at the time of shipment as 1 of 10 to Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co. in Chicago, Illinois on July 27, 1882.

Good as custom engraved, embellished and altered (see above) with half of the nickel finish remaining with some muzzle and high edge wear and flaking. The hammer and trigger show traces of original bright fire blue in protected areas. The grips are very good having faded to brown and showing some light wear, handling marks and crisp checkering. The engraving and markings are clear. The action is fine.
