Custom Carpenters Wood Plane C. 1910
In this lot is a custom carpenter’s wood plane with a Charles Buck plane blade, C. 1910. Buck Brothers was formed in 1853 by John, Charles, and Richard T. Buck in Rochester, NY, after emigrating from England and working for D. R. Barton. In 1856, they moved to Worcester, Massachusetts, then in 1864 to Millbury, MA. John stayed in Worcester as part of Buck & Reeves, later rejoining Buck Brothers as only an employee. Charles Buck had a fight with his brother and started his own edge tool company in 1873. Old timers say Charles' edge tools were very slightly superior to those of his brother. Charles Buck started his business, called the Charles Buck Edge Tool Co., in 1873. He used the mark CHARLES BUCK CAST STEEL. This plane has a blade from Charles Buck Company. The plane is custom made—typically carpenters would custom make planes to fit their style of work. The plane block measures 16" X 3" X 2 ¾; with its grip the plane is 6 1/2" tall. The blade has some rust and aging as expected, but the construction of the plane is solid.
