Custer Era U.S. Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor Carbine

This is a desirable Custer era Model 1873 Carbine with the serial number below 43,000 (11272). It has a rear sight graduated to 1,200 yards with 500 yard graduations on the right side of the base. The breechblock is marked "MODEL/1873/eagle head with crossed arrows/US" and the lock is marked with an eagle/shield motif and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD/1873". The left rear of the barrel has "V/P/eagle head" proofs. The replaced short wrist Model 1877 stock which is stamped with an "ESA" inspector cartouche has a saddle bar with ring on the left side. The buttplate is without a compartment and is marked "US" on the tang.

Fair. The metal surfaces have a smooth dark patina with some minor spotting and pitting (heavier on the barrel towards the muzzle). The saddle ring is a modern replacement. The stock is about good with some chipping and a few minor handling marks. The markings are clear. Mechanically fine.
