Manufactured from 1873 to 1877. This carbine falls into the Custer Era Trapdoors with the serial number below 43,700. This carbine comes with a copy of the August 1995 and August 1999 "Man at Arms". Page 40 of the August 1999 issue has a "Master Table Of Carbines That Might Have Been Carried At The Little Bighorn". Listed are serial numbers in the 16,000 to 43,000 ranges. There are two very close to this carbine, (36,461 and 36481). Both magazines feature informative articles on the Custer Era Trapdoor carbines. Blade front and ski slope rear sight graduated to 1,200 yards. The high arch breechblock is marked "MODEL/1873/eagle/crossed arrows/U.S.". Lock plate is marked with the eagle and "U.S /SPRINGFIELD/1873". Hammer functions with a three click tumbler. Blue finish with an oil quenched casehardened breechblock, saddle ring, and bar mounted on the left side of the stock and mounted with a one-piece straight grip stock with a steel carbine buttplate marked "US" on the tang. The bottom of the stock is marked with a circled script "P" behind the lower tang and the top of the stock is stamped with the number "23" directly ahead of the buttplate tang. The stock is absent of any other inspection cartouches.

Good. The barrel retains strong scattered traces of original blue finish with a smooth mottled brown patina on the balance. The lock retains traces of original thin blue finish with a brown patina on the balance. The hammer has a brown patina with some minor pitting and the breechblock has a smooth gray patina. The trigger guard and lower tang have a smooth brown and gray patina. The buttplate has a dark mottled brown patina with some pitting on the heel and toe. The stock remains good with some scattered minor dents and scratches. The markings are clear. The action is excellent. A rare opportunity to own a "Custer Era" U.S. Springfield Model 1873 Saddle Ring Carbine.
