Curved Blade Eaglehead Saber, made for the American market, most likely by E. Richards & Co., Birmingham, England, ca. 1790-1820, with twist carved bone (possibly marine ivory) grip. Pommel is fitted with Salter style eagle with clear detail, and tang slightly protruding thru top of head. This is the type sword preferred by American Naval officers from approx. the beginning of the 19th Century thru the War of 1812. Condition is fine to near excellent, with approx. 92% of bluing and gilding remaining on lower third of curved blade. Brass guard shows small amounts of silver plating in protected areas. Sword head is slightly loose. Leather washer has hardened but is completely present. Small retailer's initials to top edge of sword near hilt. Est.: $1,800-$2,500.
