<B>Edward S. Curtis Original Portfolio Photogravure "A Chukchansi Yokuts Type" Plate 504</B></I> on Japanese Rice Tissue mounted on vellum, copyright 1924. Original image size 11.5" x 15.25" with the plate number at upper left, title at lower left, and captioned at the bottom "From Copyright Photograph 1924 by E. S. Curtis" and "Photogravure Suffolk Eng. Co. Cambridge, Mass." Matted and custom framed to an overall size of 21.5" x 25.5". The Yokuts (Mariposans) were an ethnic group that lived in Central California. They were photographed by Curtis and included in Volume 14 of <I>The North American Indian</B></I> where he wrote, "The Yokuts knew very little about warfare. The Chukchansi were intermittently engaged with all the surrounding tribes, whether Yokuts or alien; but the purpose of their petty raids was merely to steal women and other booty, and little fighting occurred. Scalps were not taken."
