<B>Edward S. Curtis Original Portfolio Photogravure "A Southern Miwok" Plate 495</B></I> on Japanese Rice Tissue mounted on vellum, copyright 1924. Original image size 11.5" x 15.25" with the plate number at upper left, title at lower left, and captioned at the bottom "From Copyright Photograph 1924 by E. S. Curtis" and "Photogravure Suffolk Eng. Co. Cambridge, Mass." Matted and custom framed to an overall size of 21.5" x 25.5". The Miwok (Miwuk) lived in the Northern California and consisted of four distinct subgroups all connected by a common language. They were photographed by Curtis and included in Volume 14 of <I>The North American Indian</B></I> where he wrote, "The Miwok rarely practiced warfare, unless the word can be applied to the assassination of men believed to be sorcerers. The killing of these medicine men was a frequent occurrence, and expeditions for the purpose were sometimes made to rather distant villages within the Miwok boundaries. In fact, medicine men were so thoroughly feared that they never had any real friends, and therefore vengeance was never sought."
