Curt Swan - Superman Annual #7 Cover Art
Steel yourself for the thrill of a Silver Age art sensation! Here is the incredible Superman statue illustration that served as the centerpiece for the cover of Superman Annual #7! Quoting from page 112 of Eddie Zeno's super-biography on the Man of Tomorrow's top artist of the sixties, Curt Swan: A Life in Comics, historian Arlen Schumer observed, "Of all the recurrent imagery in Curt Swan's Superman family career, it is finally the statues, monuments, and memorials that are the most revealing of Swan's nature, for they show an artist whose style mirrored his name -- that of a swan itself, graceful and dignified, yet strong and resolute, permeated with an air of solemnity. They are utterly heroic models, some of the most iconic in the history of comics." Although not designated as a grey tone cover as such by Overstreet, this remarkable piece was created using a similar rendering technique. Since the final image was that of a metallic statue, no other colors were needed atop this tonal rendering. The rest of the printed cover design was most likely composed of stats. Since sixties Superman grey tone art is scarcer than rainbow kryptonite, this may be your best chance to own such a remarkable Swan Superman piece! The legend on the statue illustration reads "The Spirit of America," rather than the "Commemorating Superman's Silver Anniversary 1938-1963" that appears on the comic book cover. This legend may have been altered on a halftone stat of the art done as part of the paste-up for the printed cover. This piece has been matted to an overall size of 10" x 18", and the art is in Excellent condition.

Shipping: Small Flat (view shipping information)
