Currier and Ives, ?The Farewell? lithograph.
This is an original authentic lithograph print by the Currier & Ives company. It is in great condition. The crispness of detail and the artist?s skill in rendering the human figure and drapery make this a very desirable piece. . It is titled The Farewell at the bottom of the print and measures 12.75? x 9.5?. It is matted in a terracotta colored mat and framed with a brown wood frame that goes together well and gives the piece some color. The total size of the print and frame is 16.5? x 13.5?.
The firm of Currier & Ives, the most famous lithographers in America, was founded by Nathaniel Currier at 1 Wall Street in 1834. In 1852 Currier engaged as a bookkeeper James Merrit Ives, who had recently married into the family. An artist in his own right and with business acumen and a critical eye for technical perfection, it was not surprising he was made a partner in 1857. It was at this time that the now familiar term "Currier & Ives" came into being. The firm prospered until the deaths of Currier in 1888 and James Ives seven years later. Their sons headed the firm until 1907 when advances in lithography and uninspired management forced them to close. Works by Currier and Ives are highly sought after and very valuable, both for their historic and artistic value. Their value continues to increase daily, as does their following of collectors.
