An outstanding nautical action print subtitled &#34;Crossing the bow of &#39;Galatea&#39; in their first race for the &#39;America&#39;s Cup&#39; over the inside course New York Bay, Sept. 7th 1886. - &#40;Won by Mayflower&#41;.&#34; A full-action scene showing both racing ships and crews in action, there being other spectator ships of the period beyond. Printed on off-white paper, the ship&#39;s masts are white, the wooden decks and masts teak colored, and in a choppy, sea-green New York Bay. Also noted as being after the original painting by Franklyn Bassford, and being signed in the printed plate at lower left &#34;Franklyn Bassford /&#39;86.&#34; Framed under glass, there is a thin ¾in. edge cut in the extreme outer selvage at left, which could be easily matted o ut; otherwise in excellent condition. The America&#39;s Cup was first offered in 1851 as the Hundred Guinea Cup by the Royal Yacht Squadron of Great Britain for a race around the Isle of Wight. It was won by the &#34;America,&#34; a 100-foot schooner from New York.
